The wines of Argentina

Believe it or not, Argentina is the fifth largest wine producer in the world with most of its production lying in the Mendoza region, much of which is desert. Thus, irrigation is key to wine production in Argentina. One of the star grape varieties in Argentina is Malbec which seems very much to like this country.
Wine Buff Note: Malbec is also produced in small amounts in the France in the Loire (where it is known as Cot) and Cahors (where it is known as Auxerrois).

Bodegas Lagarde, Lujan de Cuyo

Created in 1897, this winery was purchased by the Pescarmona family in 1977. Now in the capable hands of Sofia, grand daughter of the proprietor, the winery is now producing high quality wines. Juan Roby Stordeur is head winemaker and his experience in France, Italy, the USA and Chile has brought a modern approach to this fine estate.

Bodegas Don Cristobal, Mendoza

A new discovery and one from which we will increase the range over the coming months as the wines become available. The single varietals, with the recent addition of a leafy, ripe Sangiovese (the Chianti grape) to compliment the lush, ripe Verdelho and the dense, concentrated Malbec give a range of diversity and breadth.
