The wines of Argentina
Believe it or not, Argentina is the fifth largest wine producer in the world with
most of its production lying in the Mendoza region, much of which is desert.
Thus, irrigation is key to wine production in Argentina. One of the star grape
varieties in Argentina is Malbec which seems very much to like this country.
(read the notes on the producer Weinert below!)
Wine Buff Note: Malbec is also
produced in small amounts in the France in the Loire (where it is known
as Cot) and Cahors (where it is known as Auxerrois).
Bodegas y Cavas Weinert, Lujan de Cuyo
On a recent trip to Argentina I was blown away by the sheer quality of this brilliant
estate. It takes something very special to excite my tastebuds these days and as soon as
I sniffed the first wine I knew we were on to something! The winery eschews the modern
obsession with new oak barrels and gleaming stainless steel and opts for concrete
fermentation tanks and old large oak vats for ageing. The results are brilliant leaning
to a European elegance and structure and they also hold their wines until mature, a rare
occurence these days. The rosé completes the range, rich and fruity this is a mere 14.5% alcohol!.

Bodegas Don Cristobal, Mendoza
A new discovery and one from which we will increase the range over the coming
months as the wines become available. An exciting find.
the entry level 1492 blend offer some relaxed drinking with good fruit and depth, the single varietals, with the recent additions of a leafy, ripe Sangiovese (the Chianti grape) and a chunky Cabernet to compliment the lush, ripe Verdelho and the dense, concentrated Malbec give a range of diversity and breadth.
