Austria is one of the most misunderstood wine countries in Europe. The best of
Austria's wines come from the Wachau and Kremstal. This rocky land rises above the
Danube. Specialities here include dry Rieslings and full-bodied Grüner Veltliners.
Loimer, Langenlois
Fred Loimer achieves full ripeness in the vineyard by leaving his grapes on the
vine as long as he dare, sometimes in to November. He then ferments to dryness
that gives a lovely depth on the palate supported by a steely thrust of acidity.
Remarkably good wines and a top man! Gruner Veltliner is Austria's very own grape
and produces exceptional wines in the right hands; weighty and fresh but not quite
as delicate or aromatic as the Riesling.
