The Wines of France

Red Bordeaux

Bordeaux continues to offer some of the best value wines in the world, as well as some of the most expensive. The classic communes of the Medoc such as Margaux are certainly highly priced these days; However they are still amongst the most sublime and impressive wines available. If it is more keenly priced wines you seek please look under the Haut Medoc, Saint Emilion and Other Commune headings where more modest prices still achieve excellent results.

2005 is fantastic, but so are the prices. 2006, though not as good as 2005, will be of a similar price because ofincreasing demand from emerging markets, noticably the sub-continent, Russia and the far east has kept pressure on values.

Interesting times in Bordeaux where only the elite few, perhaps the top 50 or 60 Chateaux, continue to enjoy high

(and some would say too high) prices, whils't their peers from the more humble communes struggle on in the face of

huge competition from the New World. It truly is a case of haves and have nots!

Our Bordeaux selection is constantly changing. We have excellent contacts both in Bordeaux and amongst other importers in the UK.

The "Right bank" across the river from the medoc is dominated by the Merlot grape and the easier, riper, more obvious flavours have gained popularity with the critics leading to wines such as Petrus and Le Pin in Pomerol fetching incredible prices way above even the famous first growths of the Medoc. Most people’s vinous pleasure has to be found a little lower down the price ladder than this and we are happy to oblige.

Château Profile

We cannot leave Bordeaux without mentioning our longest serving member. Chateau Lamothe de Haux, a real family affair, Anne Neel now ably assisted by her daughter Maria and son in law Denis keep on turning out charming excellent value wine. A plump Merlot based red and a tangy Sauvignon based white as well as being responsible for the honeyed Château Manos in Cadillac.
