The Wines of FranceWhite Burgundy
Chardonnay from Maconnais and Chalonnais are comparable in price and
quality to Chardonnay from anywhere in the world. The incomparable village
wines of the Cote de Beaune such as Chassagne and Meursault are well
represented. From Chablis we import two of the very best exponents;
Fevre offers a generous oak influenced wine and Louis Michel a flintier leaner style.
ChablisDomaine VrignaudGrape growers for five generations, the Vrignaud family have been making their own wine for the last fifteen years. Their limestone and clay soils are tended with no insecticides or fertilizers and have encouraged the development of Typhlodromes, small preditory spiders which prey on other insects. The wines are produced in stainless steel vats, where they mature for twenty months on their lees, this gives a pure mineral taste with stong gout de terroir.
Domaine de Chessimont, Louis MichelThe highly regarded Louis Michel wines are some of the finest in Chablis. Totally unoaked the wines achieve striking purity with intense fruit and piercing freshness. 6 to 9 months on lees adds depth and finesse to his wines. We are proud to represent Louis Michel under the Domaine de Chessimont label in the U.K.
Jean Paul DroinSince son Benoit took up the reins a dramatic increase in both quality and interest have elevated this estate to the highest rating.
White BurgundyLouis Latour, BeauneSituated in Beaune itself Maison Louis Latour founded in 1797 provides a reliable source of wine. Their Corton Charlemagne surely ranks amongst the best white wines in the world. Value and quality go hand in hand throughout their extensive range of excellent wines. With the increasing prices for the 2005 reds we have tried to stick with the more than acceptable 2004's.
Domaine Vincent Dureuil-JanthialA friend of Paul Jacqueson, he has transformed the family farm and produces exquisite wines. His cellars are deep and cold and fermentation takes much longer than normal adding great richness and complexity
Small Domaines and Independent WinemakersDomaine Michel Chavet et Fils, Saint-Veran10 hectares in Davayé, at the foot of the Rock of Soultre. Chritophe Chavet is the sixth generation of his family to run the domaine. A fine crisp, clean, fresh minerally wine with excellent intensity.
Domaine Alain Normand, MaconPure and concentrated wine. This is a domaine to watch; Alain is joining forces with his brother and the resultant 12 hectares are on prime sites producing high quality fruit.
Henri et Paul Jacqueson, RullyThe wines of Henri and Paul Jacqueson are on many of France’s finest restaurant wine lists. Low yielding old vines coupled with proficient winemaking produce beautiful wines.
Domaine de SoufrandiseIn our opinion the top estate in the village.
Henri Prudhon, Saint AubinTop quality white Burgundy and staggeringly good value , fresh and focused the Prudhons never let you down.
Francois Jobard, MeursaultOne of the top three producers whose style tends towards the lean and taut with only sparing use of oak. For a taste of Meursault at a third the price his Bourgogne Blanc is a masterpiece.
Domaine Morey-Coffinet, Chassagne MontrachetA meeting of two great Burgundy dynasties. Michel and his son Thibault strive to create wines of great harmony and balance. As with many growers in the top villages theirs is a patchwork of tint parcels of land that some of the industrial size producers elsewhere in the World would find laughable. For instance, they own vines in six different Premier Cru of Chassagne ranging from the largest at 0.72 hectares of La Romanée down to 0.16 hectares of Morgeot. Each of these precious parcels of land is handled with the knowledge and experience handed down through the generations to craft the most delicious wine.
Bernard Morey, Chassagne MontrachetBernard produces red and white wines of great panache. The whites are fine with a most attrcative fatness and richness this makes them highly enjoyable immediately but even more so after a few years in bottle.
