The Wines of Germany

As Germany lies so far north it has a shorter growing season and a cooler climate than most of the world's wine producing countries. Thus, nearly all of the grape varieties that are successfully grown in Germany are white as they are the only ones which can be persuaded to ripen. Along with Austria, German Wines are much misunderstood. We provide an excellent alternative to the wines which have earned Germany a bad name. A great German Riesling is possibly one of the must sublime wines to drink, and the finest can be aged for many years. Come on, why not try something different. An aged Riesling from Kunstler, would come close to being my desert island white wine, purely for their unique appeal and versatility with modern cuisine (or if marooned on a desert island their compatibility with coconuts…..)

Balanced and poised wines, they have body and vivacity which is often overlooked. The Spätlese and Auslese wines are of particular note.

Fürst, Franconia

This thirty seven acre estate is run by Paul Fürst. He uses oak ageing in French barrels for the red Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). The wine is fragrant and charming with a smooth, developed style and a rounded fresh character. His Silvaner is a fruity, light white with, as the name suggests, minerally undertones.
